SUMMARY:Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU)
DESCRIPTION:The Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) is an inter-governmental organization dedicated to promoting and supporting the development of the Caribbean information and communications technologies (ICT) sector for the socio-economic development of the region. \nCognizant at that time of the growing importance of telecommunications for the social and economic development of the Caribbean and the need to foster international cooperation and development by means of efficient telecommunications services\, the Governments of the Member States of the Caribbean Community established the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) by treaty on 28th April\, 1989. \nThe agreed primary goals of the CTU\, inter alia\, were: \n\nTo facilitate the coordination of the planning\, programming and development of intra-regional and international communications networks to meet the immediate and future telecommunications needs of the Region;\nTo assist the development of the national components of regional and international telecommunications networks; and\nTo promote the general awareness of the telecommunications needs of the Caribbean Region and its potential for promoting the socio-economic development of the Region.\n\nIn 2004\, the CTU’s 7th General Conference of Ministers expanded the mission of the CTU to incorporate all aspects of information and communication technologies (ICT) and amended the membership structure of the Union to permit non-CARICOM Caribbean States\, private sector and civil society participation. \nThe CTU then embarked on a programme of operational activities and projects which served to position the CTU as a credible and relevant institution which was able to effectively address the needs of its members in the rapidly changing technological environment. Its new mission is “To create an environment in partnership with members to optimize returns from ICT resources for the benefit of stakeholders” \nThe CTU has been able to create a multi-stakeholder platform that actively promotes collaboration among all ICT stakeholders and public-private partnerships. Through its expanded membership\, the private sector\, civil society and regulators are actively engaged in the policy formulation processes. \nThe CTU\, by its work over the last 10 years\, is uniquely poised to fulfill the role first envisioned by the CARICOM Governments when they established the CTU in 1989. The CTU has become: \n\nThe primary facilitator for the formulation of Caribbean ICT policy and best practices\,\nThe preferred source of ICT advice for regional Governments\,\nA major contributor to the development of ICT capacity within the region\, and\nThe designated advocate for Caribbean ICT positions at international fora.

SUMMARY:Girls in ICT 2024
DESCRIPTION:This year’s theme for the Girls in ICT day celebrations is “Leadership“\, to underscore the critical need for strong female role models in science\, technology\, engineering\, and mathematics (STEM) careers. \nAlthough women now fill 40% of high-skill occupations globally\, their participation in ICT-related fields continues to be low. \nWomen are nearly absent from software development\, engineering\, technology research\, academia as well as at the highest levels of policy making. They also tend to leave science and technology jobs at higher rates than men. \nWhile there is a leadership gender gap in every industry\, the largest gaps are found in the STEM fields. Women in ICT often find themselves in junior or support roles rather than in managerial roles\, with little opportunity for advancement. They are also less likely to hold an executive position\, become ICT entrepreneurs\, or be represented among science and technology policymakers. \nTo thrive in STEM\, girls and young women must be exposed to women in leadership positions\, fostering inspiration and breaking down barriers that hinder their progress. The Girls in ICT Day 2024 theme aims to address these challenges\, encouraging empowerment and leadership development for a more equitable future in STEM.
